VoltaChem Power-2-X Tour 2021 #2:  Opportunities in electrochemical CO2 utilization: From high-value products to high-volume impact

The VoltaChem Power-2-X Tour is a series of four online events which will offer a deep dive into key developments in industrial electrification. Livestreams from on-site locations in an interactive talk show setting will offer opportunities to interact with experts from around the world. With the aim to inform, inspire, and in the long run to help to make sensible decisions on future investments that will make the chemical industry more sustainable.

This second edition of the Power-2-X Tour will be held on June 30th, from 11.00 - 12.30 hrs (CEST), focusing on Opportunities in electrochemical CO2 utilization: From high-value products to high-volume impact- a topic that is at the heart of the VoltaChem Power-2-Chemicals program line. In this talk show, live from Total Research & Technology Feluy, Belgium, we focus on CO2 conversion technologies that provide opportunities for making the chemical industry truly sustainable.

Expert panel

Joining host Jerre Maas and co-host Martijn de Graaff (VoltaChem) at the talk show table are:

 

 

 

 

 

 

They will discuss the challenges and opportunities of electrochemical CO2 conversion and explore and compare different technological options for the production of both high-value and high-volume chemicals. They will also talk about topics like business cases, industry integration, and impact in the short- and long term. 

Online presentation & video pitches

Adding to the table discussion online will be Professor David Sinton, who will give a presentation on electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to ethylene. Next to that, Wouter van Winden and Karl Hauptmeier will contribute with video pitches on their experience with CO2 utilization in industrial practice.

About the experts

Moritz Schreiber is project leader of CO2 electroconversion to chemicals & fuels at the Refining & Chemicals branch of TotalEnergies, focusing on the evaluation and industrialization of CO2 electroconversion technologies. He joined the company in 2017 working on hydrotreating for biofuel production in support of the start-up of TotalEnergies’s La Mède biorefinery. He received his PhD on heterogeneous catalysis for refining and petrochemical applications from the Technische Universität München.

Erica Ording is the Team & Technology Lead for the VOLTA electrochemistry platform within Avantium. She obtained a PhD in Chemistry at Leiden University in 2015. After her PhD she worked at Dutch Funding Agency NWO where she coordinated academic and public-private partnership grants in the chemistry field. She joined Avantium in 2017 as a Team Leader and Operations manager in the Renewable Chemistries department, where she initially lead the team that develops new applications for side-streams, such as lignin and humins. She now leads VOLTA, the electrochemistry platform that focuses on the scale-up and commercialization of COconversion technology.

Anca Anastasopol holds a PhD in Material Science from Delft University of Technology and is specialized in energy conversion and storage technologies. Within the VoltaChem Program, Dr. Anca Anastasopol is coordinating projects related to the electrochemical reduction of CO2
Her main focus is process integration and process intensification for electrochemical conversions. Dr. Ir. Anastasopol acts as a system engineer in several projects aiming at research, development and demonstration of sustainable technologies involving the utilization of CO2.

David Sinton is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto, and a Canada Research Chair. The Sinton group develops electrochemical systems to produce renewable fuels and chemical feedstocks from CO2 and renewable electricity, in collaboration with the Sargent group at University of Toronto. Previously the Sinton group developed a industrial fluid testing systems to improve the economic and environmental performance of current energy operations—technology that is now commercialized through the startup Interface Fluidics Ltd. Dr. Sinton was an NSERC E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellow, and is a FCSME, FASME, FCAE and FAAAS.  

Wouter van Winden holds an MSc degree in Bioprocess Technology of Wageningen University, The Netherlands. He obtained a PhD degree in the field of metabolic engineering of micro-organisms at Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. He then worked as an assistant professor metabolomics at the same university from 2002-2007. In 2007, Wouter moved from academia to industry to become a fermentation scientist at the DSM Biotechnology Center in Delft, The Netherlands. He was involved in development and large-scale implementation of new fermentation processes, as well as optimization of existing ones for various business groups of DSM. His focus areas are fermentation technology, process modelling and data analysis, and science management. Since 2010, he holds the position of principal scientist fermentation. During his career, he spent periods as a visiting researcher in Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland, China and the USA. He is married, with 3 kids and lives in The Hague, The Netherlands.

Karl Hauptmeier holds an MSc degree in Energy- and Process- Engineering from TU Berlin and has been granted with multiple fellowships during his academic career. He is the Managing Director of Norsk e-Fuel AS, a company addressing a key challenge of tomorrow´s energy system: The conversion of renewable electricity into fuels and chemicals. Previous to his position at Norsk e-Fuel, Karl has gathered in depth technological know-how as Senior Product Manager of Sunfire and interdisciplinary experiences while working with the International Energy Agency and McKinsey & Company.

Jerre Maas, MSc will be our host during the VoltaChem Power-2-X Tour. With a background in Social and Economic Psychology he brings a totally different view to the table. As the founder of interaction tool PresentersWall he will make sure that you will be part of the conversation and engaged during these events!

Martijn de Graaff will be the co-host in this second edition of the VoltaChem Power-2-X Tour. He is responsible for program management and business development at the Shared Innovation Program VoltaChem. Before getting involved in industrial electrification, he has been working in multiple business development roles related to innovation in chemistry, chemical process technology and high-tech equipment. Martijn is heavily involved in setting up public-private regional, national and trans-national collaborations in the field of electrification and industrial transformation in North-Western Europe.
