On track to PERFORM in integrated electro-synthesis

01-02-2019

On track to PERFORM in integrated electro-synthesisOn January 24-25, the 9 M€ EU funded innovation project PERFORM was successfully kicked-off in Delft. Short for PowER platform, PERFORM aims at developing highly efficient and integrated electrochemical systems that can substantially improve sustainable production of valuable building blocks from bio-based feedstocks. VoltaChem contributes to PERFORM through the Power-2-Chemicals program line. Coordinated by VoltaChem/TNO, the PERFORM consortium has started the development of an open-access piloting platform for demonstration of paired electro-synthesis and integrated product recovery, which will result in energy savings and emission reductions in biochemical processes.

In the coming 4 years, the consortium will develop a flexible PowerPlatform pilot plant that will enable the demonstration of technologies and innovations, leading to the implementation of more sustainable electrochemical processes.
The PERFORM pilot plant, to be built by TNO, VITO, and Hysytech, will continue to serve after the project, as a platform to validate innovative electrochemical process routes.

Significant impact Power-2-Chemicals technology

The PERFORM project fits seamlessly into VoltaChem’s Power-2-Chemicals program line, where the primary goal is to develop technology on electrochemical production of key chemical intermediates. PERFORM is expected to reduce the environmental impact of chemical production by lowering CO2 emissions thanks to the advanced use of bio-based products and renewable energy. It will also be key to the future of sustainable society using local resources.

It is expected that PERFORM and the future development of its technologies will have a deep impact on the European chemical industry and economy and create high-end jobs and associated positive downstream effects.

Initial results

In the next consortium meeting planned in June this year, initial results are expected of the consortium led by VoltaChem/TNO and consisting of 10 other specialized industrial and academic partners from 7 European countries: VITO (Belgium), Avantium (The Netherlands), INSTM (Italy), Gensoric (Germany), Hysytech (Italy), Sustainable Innovations (Spain), Perstorp (Sweden), Radici Chimica (Italy), AVA Biochem (Switzerland) and Novamont (Italy).
