Next steps in Solid Oxide Electrolysis

VoltaChem researchers are developing the next generation of Solid Oxide Electrolysis (SOE) cells at TNO’s Faraday lab in Petten. SOE technology offers great opportunities for large scale hydrogen production, renewable energy storage and, in particular, for electrification of the chemical industry. A unique feature is the co-electrolysis of steam and carbon dioxide, resulting in the generation of syngas. Operating at high temperatures, the SOE technology has great potential for integration in existing chemical processes facilities.

The materials issue of hydrogen production

Producing adequate amounts of hydrogen is crucial to establishing a fully sustainable energy supply and producing sustainable chemical products. But the scale of the energy system can pose important problems. One important issue is the availability of raw materials for large-scale production of hydrogen through electrolysis. In a current Voltachem study, the scale of this problem is being quantified. In particular, iridium, platinum, and tantalum, cobalt and nickel are materials of concern.

New facilities for hydrogen research: The Faraday Lab

Developed with 6-million-euro funding from the Dutch national scheme for Electrochemical Conversion & Materials, the new Faraday Lab in Petten is a significant extension of the facilities of TNO. It is dedicated to working on innovative solutions together with industrial partners, in the development and testing of materials and components for all relevant electrolyzer technologies: PEM, SOE, AEM and alkaline. Now one of the world's largest hydrogen test facilities and equipped with state-of-the-art hardware, the lab will officially open in February 2020.

Power-2-Fuels: New innovation project brings application of e-fuels closer

Together with 9 partners from the industry and mobility sectors, VoltaChem, TNO, SmartPort, and Deltalinqs have recently started the Power-2-Fuels innovation project. During the kick-off on 30 September 2019) all parties involved were present. In this project the demand for synthetic fuels from an end-user perspective will be analyzed, applicable technologies will be compared and a design for possible future value chains and associated stakeholders will be drafted. It is envisioned that, based on the results of this project, an innovation program will be initiated that addresses the main technical and non-technical hurdles for bringing e-fuels into large scale application.
